Aeronautical Radio Operator Certificate (AROC)

What is an AROC?

An Aeronautical Radio Operator Certificate (AROC) authorises a person to operate an aviation radio and make broadcasts on aeronautical frequencies. In Australia, an AROC is required for personnel who communicate with aircraft using aviation radio equipment. This commonly includes:

  • Aerodrome Reporting Officers (AROs)

  • Ground personnel responsible for airport radio communications on an open frequency

  • Certain emergency personnel

  • RPAS operators operating under certain conditions

Holding an AROC ensures that radio transmissions are conducted in accordance with standard aviation phraseology, procedures, and safety practices.
