Accredited or tailored WSO training

​Certavation delivers practical Works Safety Officer training for aerodromes requiring personnel to safely support, supervise or coordinate works in an operational aviation environment.

​

The course can be delivered as the nationally recognised Aerodrome Works Safety Officer Working on Time Limited Works Skill Set, in partnership with an RTO, or as a tailored, non-accredited Works Safety Officer program developed specifically around your organisation’s aerodrome, procedures, works environment and operational risks.

Whether your works involve routine maintenance, contractor access or larger project activity, the focus is the same: ensuring personnel understand their role, communicate clearly and help prevent works from creating a hazard to aircraft.

What the course covers

The training is aligned with the intent of the Part 139 Manual of Standards, including the safe planning, and conduct of aerodrome works. 

​

Depending on the format selected, the course may include:

• the role and responsibilities of a Works Safety Officer

• airside access, driving and situational awareness

• aerodrome markings, markers, lighting and visual aids

• works site setup, protection and access control

• Method of Working Plans and time limited works

• radio communications and coordination with aerodrome operations

• NOTAM, ATC and stakeholder communication considerations

• inspection of works areas before, during and after works

• FOD, plant, vehicle and personnel control

• runway, taxiway and apron works scenarios

• hazard identification, risk controls and escalation

• returning movement areas to operational service.

Tailored to your operation

For many aerodromes, a tailored Works Safety Officer program provides the most practical outcome. This allows the training to be built around your own aerodrome layout, local procedures, contractor arrangements, radio environment, works approval process, inspection requirements and operational constraints.​ This is particularly valuable for organisations seeking practical, site-specific training for personnel who may not require a nationally recognised Skill Set, but still need a clear understanding of how to safely manage works in the vicinity of aircraft operations.

 

Practical experience

Certavation has delivered Works Safety Officer training and support across a range of complex aerodrome environments, including a Code 4 mining aerodrome, as well as more recently, delivering accredited works safety training for personnel operating in both a military airbase and international airport environment.

This experience allows the training to move beyond theory and focus on the practical decisions Works Safety Officers need to make on site - including how to communicate effectively, recognise unsafe conditions, manage contractors, protect operational areas and ensure works do not compromise aircraft safety.

Outcome

Participants leave with a clearer understanding of their responsibilities and the practical steps required to support safe aerodrome works. For accredited delivery, participants receive the relevant nationally recognised Skill Set through Certavation’s RTO partner. For non-accredited delivery, participants receive a certificate of completion confirming the training undertaken and the areas covered.
